Rosh Hashanah Recipe: Fesenjan Persian Chicken with Pomegranate Walnut Sauce

rosh

A good friend introduced me to this Rosh Hashanah Fesenjan Persian Chicken with Pomegranate Walnut Sauce recipe a few years ago, and it's been a New Year staple of mine ever since.  To say that it tastes divine is an understatement.  As a matter of fact, my book club has me to bring it to our annual holiday party every year.  They think I am an outstanding cook.  Little do they know that this is one of the only dishes I make really well. … [Read more...]

Date Night with McCormick & Schmick’s

s-EAT-PRAY-LOVE-large

As I'm sure you know, the much anticipated theatrical release of “Eat, Pray, Love,” based on the book by Elizabeth Gilbert, is right around the corner.  The story of one woman's search for everything across Italy, India and Indonesia is one that inspired millions of women.  I can't wait to see it brought to life on the big screen.  I'll probably see it with a group of girlfriends.  So, here we have Date Night with McCormick & Schmick's. … [Read more...]

Edible Manhattan: The Spotted Pig

jamaica

In the heart of the West Village at 314 West 11th Street lies one of favorite restaurants, the Spotted Pig.  It's called a gastro pub for its unique flavors and tastes.  It looks like an average bar but the food is far from average. On any given night, you'll have to wait in line for a table.  They have one bar upstairs and one downstairs that are great for hanging out and having a few drinks.  You can eat the bar if you like, but we like getting a table for the complete experience.  We love their hamburgers served with Roquefort cheese.  Also … [Read more...]

Edible Brooklyn: Miriam Restaurant in Park Slope

2miriam

After our amazingly fun trip to the Prospect Park Zoo on Sunday for Kids Club 13 Fleece weekend, we were hungry. Alison Lowenstein of Brooklynbaby.com recommended a restaurant called Miriam in Park Slope based on what I was looking for, and she pretty much nailed it. Ever since living in Israel many years ago, I am an Israeli cuisine junkie.  Our closest friends are Israeli and live on Long Island, so we are always fed my favorite dishes there.  Living in Westchester, we rarely have the occasion to get Israeli food, so I was psyched to try this trendy … [Read more...]

Edible Manhattan: Commerce

I opened up my new edition of Time Out Kids this afternoon, looking for a place to eat this afternoon in the West Village.  I spotted a "family-friendly" choice called Commerce not far from where we were at that moment, so I suggested that my sister, daughter and I head that way.  We were surprised and happy to find it in the home of a restaurant that we used to like very much, Grange Hall, which was a neighborhood legend in its own rite.  The description in Time Out Kids was very praise-worthy, so we went knowing nothing about the menu.It … [Read more...]

Culture Mom Night Out: God of Carnage and Junior’s

Lat night my friend treated me to a ticket to see God of Carnage on Broadway. It was my belated birthday gift.  I didn't know the story beforehand, but I did know that the play was a Tony Award winner in 2009 and has received rave reviews.  Plus, you can't beat the cast: Jeff Daniels, Dylan Baker, Lucy Liu and Janet McTeer.  It's also written by French playwright Yasmina Reza, who wrote Broadway's Art.It all starts out very sane and civilized as two married couples, who have never met, meet in the Brooklyn loft of one to talk about a … [Read more...]

Edible Manhattan: Dafni Greek Taverna

I am so pscyhed to share a food recommendation that I found last night in Times Square.  You know, sometimes before a show, you just don't want to spend a fortune or go where all the tourists are dining.  And while there is a plethora of really good food up and down 9th Avenue, I haven't really had good Greek food as far down as 42nd Street.  Uncle Nick is an exception, but it's further up around 50th& 9th, and also very good.Leave it to my sister to introduce me to yet another goodie last night, Dafni Greek Taverna.   I kid you … [Read more...]

KidCulture: An Enchanted Pig at the New Victory Theater and the Cupcake Cafe

Once upon a time, a culture loving chick (me!) won a contest on NYCityMama.com (@NYCityMama) for two tickets to see The Enchanted Pig at the New Victory Theater in Manhattan. No, seriously, The Enchanted Pig is a fairytale (hence the opening) and I really did win tickets to take my daughter to see this today.  When I won, I was truly elated as I've been dying to take my daughter to one of their many international productions.  I planned the day carefully so we could make the most of our day out.  First, we had lunch at one of my old … [Read more...]
