Why Gloria Steinem Makes me Proud

Gloria Steinem

Last night I watched “Gloria: In Her Own Words” on HBO, an engrossing documentary about the woman who helped spearhead the women’s movement of the late ’60s and ’70s, the one and only Gloria Steinem.  It was informative and inspiring, about a woman born at a time when women had limited rights and Steinem's upward battle to improve her every women's lives.  She believed that talking wasn't enough and that women had to take the streets to demand change. And indeed she did. Early on in the hour-long portrait, we learned that she never … [Read more...]

Shopping Smarter at Marshall’s/TJ Maxx and Giveaway

As a 40+ year-old woman, I am constantly on a quest to become a better dresser.  My body's changing.  I can no longer just slip into a size 6 like I used to.  Whether it's true or not, two pregnancies have taken a toll on my body. In addition, I don't have as much time to color coordinate my clothes, and I find myself spending less and less time trying to figure out what I'm wearing.  I generally always feel under-dressed, like I'm wearing the wrong thing, like I don't have enough dressy clothes.  Now that I am re-entering the workforce in more … [Read more...]

My Kleenex Field Trip to the American Museum of Natural History

Dinosaur exhibit at natural museum history

When I was invited to spend the morning at the American Museum of Natural History with my friends from The Motherhood, I couldn't resist. The museum has long been one of my favorite places to visit in NYC, and my kids and I have spent hours exploring the dinosaur exhibit and we love our visits to the Planetarium.  The museum is located in my old neighborhood, the Upper West Side, so it's always special to go back and the museum holds many special memories for all of us. Funnily enough, it being summer, my kids are crazy about their day camp.  So in … [Read more...]

Review: Why I Recommend “The Help” (the film)

The Help

I've been quiet this week for a reason but it's kind of ironic.  I've been hanging out with 3,000 other bloggers at a conference called BlogHer in San Diego but I've hardly blogged.  I have so many posts to write post BlogHer, but I feel compelled to write about The Help, since it premiered in the theaters today.  I attended an advance screening hosted by Dream Works, which was a highlight of the weekend, and also a rest from the craziness. I had a feeling I'd like this movie.  I read the book by Kathryn Stockett last year and finished it in 2 or … [Read more...]

My Impressions of BlogHer 2011 – the Good and the Bad

rockstar

I just came back from BlogHer 2011, a conference I'd been eagerly awaiting for some time.  Five days in San Diego never sounded like a bad idea in the first place.  It's a stunning city, one that I love going back to and still need to explore.  I love its scenery, weather and as a bonus, one of my best friends lives there. I had such plans for this BlogHer.  Having blogged for more than a year now, I knew what I needed to learn and who I wanted to meet in the world of my favorite bloggers.  I felt confident that this would be my best … [Read more...]

Free NYC: 92Y Children’s Warhol Festival

This September you can get more for your kids than just “15 minutes of fame” – you can bring them to the 92nd Street Y Children’s Warhol Festival.  Thanks to the generosity of the Mugrabi Collection, we’re exhibiting 80 original paintings that Andy Warhol created in 1983 especially for children. The paintings – colorful, strong images of trains, toys, apples and the like – will be hung low on the walls, at a level comfortable for young viewers. Philadelphia with Kids: A Day at the Franklin Institute

Mummies of the World

We always love spending time with my sister and her husband in Philadelphia and this past weekend was no exception, especially considering the fact that we spent time at a keeper of many of my childhood memories, the Franklin Institute.  Ever since I was a young girl,I can recall looking over the handrail of the marble stairwell to look at the Foucault pendulum going back and forth (pictured on left).  The pendulum is the centerpiece of this impressive museum but it only begins to scrape the surface of what the museum has to offer.  My brother-in-law … [Read more...]

Summer Travel Read: Those Who Saved Us

49465

Do you ever buy a book that appeals to you immensely but sits inside a drawer of your night table for months until you pull it out, remembering how wonderful the back copy and cover looked in the book store when you bought it?  I suppose it was a year ago that I picked up Those Who Saved Us by Jenna Blum.  Maybe not quite so long, but it bothered me for a long time that I wasn't reading it.  I knew in my heart it was a book that would hold meaning for me on so many levels.  Like the author, I helped interview Holocaust survivors with the Shoah … [Read more...]

Exploring NYC using Foursquare

FourSquare

When I was invited on a tour of Tribeca with the gang from Foursquare, I instantly accepted.  For one thing, I love tours of NYC; for another, I admittedly had yet to venture into the depth of this mobile application and was curious if I'd been missing anything.  In my mind, it was an app to see and be seen on and that didn't interest me.  I don't want to check in to destinations and have everyone I know on Facebook or Twitter know where I am.  I still value my privacy and time with my family.  But in the back of my mind, I've wondered about the … [Read more...]
