Pinterest for the Novice (and the Styleless)

Screen shot 2012-06-14 at 11.04.48 PM

When I first heard about Pinterest, I wondered how the heck someone like me would use it?  I'm not into fashion.  I'm not into style.  I'm not into decor. I'm not the best photographer (although I do take a lot of pictures).  I'm not very visual, not very organized.  What was in it for me? But the more I heard about it through the grapevine and through my tweeps, my ears perked up and I created an account.  There were a few reasons why my interest peaked.  I found out that: It drives more referral traffic than Google Plus, Linked In, and You … [Read more...]

Every Child Deserves a 5th Birthday

save the children

Every Child deserves a 5th birthday. That sounds so obvious, but every year 7.6 million children lose that chance. Right now, Save the Children is asking mothers around the world to raise their voices to help more children everywhere survive. Together we can insist that our children’s health and well-being is more than a personal priority it should be a global priority. Death from preventable causes like pneumonia, diarrhea and newborn complications are no longer acceptable. Officials from around the world are meeting in Washington, DC this week … [Read more...]

Tween Talk

Screen shot 2012-06-12 at 7.50.57 AM

My daughter turned nine a few months ago and I have already seen changes in our conversations.  They are getting heavier and more complex.  I'm having to really dig into my brain and my heart to provide the right answers and guide her in the right direction as she enters this new phase of life, inches closer to being a pre-teen, then a teen-ager, then an adult.  Can we please slow down time? When I talk to her, I'm shifting my memory back to my own childhood and sharing my own stories with her so she can see that she is not alone (" When I was your … [Read more...]

Review: The Lyons at the Cort Theatre

Screen shot 2012-06-10 at 6.59.07 PM

It's always nice to be reminded that there are millions of dysfunctional families in this world. The Lyons on Broadway is just one of those shows.  It may even make you feel better about your own life. But whatever the case, it's a terrific Broadway show.  One of the best I've seen in a long time. The skeletons that come out of the closet during this course of this show about three family members rallying around their dying father in his last days.  It could not get any more sordid.  Ben Lyons is dying of cancer and just wants a … [Read more...]

Saving the Other Half: How the World Can End Preventable Child Deaths

image002

I am pleased to announce that I am a blogger who supports Shot@Life, a life-saving United Nations organization that supports children around the world with life-saving vaccinations. No statistic can express what it is to see even one child die in such a way; to see a mother sitting hour after anxious hour leaning her child's body against her own; to see the child's head turn on limbs which are unnaturally still, stiller than in sleep; to want to stop even that small movement because it is so obvious that there is so little energy left inside the … [Read more...]

Preferred Family Website Poster

Today I went to a really interesting conversation led by extraordinary women who are as passionate about travel as I am to kick off a new family travel web site, www.PreferredFamily.com. It was a wonderful afternoon, spent at the beautiful Trump Tower Columbus Circle, where I sipped champagne and gazed out at an amazing view of Central Park. As a traveling parent, I'm always looking for a one-stop resource for information on where to stay with my kids.  That's why I'm fascinated by this site, where families can book a trip and find discussion on … [Read more...]

Words from Mad Men

In honor of the upcoming Mad Men finale, Wordnik has put together a list of their favorite words from Don Draper and the gang.  Since I'm a Mad Men fanatic, I do feel compelled to share the list. Below is a sampling of some of the top words. A complete list can be found here. 1.  bitchin’ Peggy [holding up Michael’s work]: “Have I lost my sense of smell or is this good?” Stan [laughs]: “That’s bitchin’.” Episode: “Tea Leaves,” April 1, 2012 Bitchin’ is slang for “excellent; first-rate,” and originated as … [Read more...]
