Review: Ajijaak on Turtle Island at The New Victory Theater

Ajijaak on Turtle Island

Beautiful and Elegant puppetry! My girls were mesmerized by "Ajijaak on Turtle Island," now playing at the New Victory Theater. If only I had been able to capture the amazement in their eyes and could show you their jaws dropped to the floor in wonder. They loved the puppets: the Turtle, the Whooping Cranes, the Buffalo, and the music! As a bonus, there was a song they taught us, a sure fire way into my kiddos hearts. We are just beginning our theater indoctrination and what a great way to start.  The story looks to explain the Chaos Read More

A First Time Theater Experience for Newly Arrived Immigrants at the New Victory Theater: “Pss Pss”

New Vic_PssPss_(c)Sylvie Bosc copy

This past weekend I had the unique experience of watching a newly arrived family from Afghanistan watch their very first theatrical play, in the very first theater they had ever sat in - on Broadway, but not a Broadway show. Still, the effect of watching them enjoy their first show was moving, and quite magical. It also helped that it was at one of my favorite theaters for children in NYC, the New Victory Theater on 42nd Street. The show we would see, "Pss Pss," hailed from Switzerland, as the bulk of their programming is from around the world. Like Read More

Guest Post: Review of The Pied Piper at NYC’s New Victory Theater

VictorySocial_1

Guest writer Liat Ginsberg is a mother and former journalist for the Israeli newspaper, Maariv. She has taught at the Film and Media Department at Hunter College. There are very few plays that kids and adults will enjoy at the same time. The Pied Piper, which recently ended its run at the New Victory Theater, is one of them. Even if the you and the kids know the story by heart, it was still fascinating to witness the display of 410 handcrafted marionettes, including 300 ravenous rats, who were brought to life by 11 puppeteers. All the marionettes are Read More

Our NYC Staycation

PicMonkey Collage - NYC

This past spring break was an interesting one. After living in and near NYC for a lot of years, I decided it was time for my kids to have a NYC staycation. We stayed in hotels, went to museums on 42nd Street like Madame Tussaud's, took a bus tour, ate in Chinatown and Korea Town, went to the top of the Empire State Building, visited the Statue of Liberty and toured Ellis Island, went to the 9/11 Memorial, explored the orchids at the Botanical Gardens in the Bronx and had pizza on Arthur Avenue, indulged in cupcakes at Carlos Bakery, strolled through Read More

Review: Catch Me! (Attrape-moi) at The New Victory Theater

flipfabrique

A Saturday afternoon spent at the New Victory Theater is the perfect one for my kids and I, and this past Saturday was no exception. My daughter and I went to see the extremely creative and utterly wonderful CATCH ME! (Attrape-moi), featuring the six young talents of Flip FabriQue, an up-and-coming troupe from Quebec City, Canada, whose members have performed with Cirque du Soleil, Cirque Éloize, 7 Fingers and more. We ventured to a 12pm show which we found full of other families with (much younger) children than my tween. But after being an avid Read More

Review: A Contemporary Pinocchio at New Victory

pinocchionewvictory

I'm mad about the productions brought to the NYC stage by my friends at the New Victory Theater. I've been blogging about them since the beginning of TheCultureMom in early 2010. I always know I’m going to get high-quality, innovative and completely original programming and bring it into the creative minds of my children.  Literally every production is mind-blowing. They ooze with talent and creativity, often from around the world. The New Victory Theater's latest production, PINOCCHIO, making its U.S. premiere at The New Victory Theater through March Read More

Guest Post: Review of The Light Princess at The New Victory Theater

thelightprincess2

Have you ever seen a six years old reaction to an adults kissing? Well, sit in the play, The Light Princess at the New Victory Theater, and you’ll get dozens of kids screaming, “ewweeeee”. Before the kiss, you’ll hear the kids asking each other frantically, “Are they going to kiss?” and when they kiss, many of them will turn their heads and refuse to look at the "scary" kiss. This musical, performed at the New Victory Theater by the A.R.T. Institute at Harvard follows the journey of a young princess cursed to live without gravity, based on the Read More

Guest Post: Review of Cirque ZIVA at the New Victory Theater

cirque ziva

CIRQUE ZÍVA at the New Victory Theater, with artistic direction by Danny Chang and choreography by Angela Chang, is a superbly performed piece of physical theatre. If their purpose was to demonstrate the incredible capabilities of the human body, they achieved it without a doubt. The Golden Dragon Acrobats are flexible and well balanced athletes, actors and artists who were trained in their craft from early childhood. There are acrobats spinning around within metal rings, strong women standing on each other, while keeping smiles on their faces, men Read More

Review and Giveaway: The New Victory Theater, NYC

bello mania

One thing I love about the New Victory Theater is that I always know I'm going to get high-quality, innovative and completely original programming.  Literally every production is mind-blowing. So, of course, after seeing the latest New Victory production, Bello Mania, I can say the same thing.  I  knew very little about former Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey clown Bello Nock, who directs and stars in this new show along with a talented troupe of circus performers.  When he first came out on stage, looking exactly like he does in the photo above, Read More
