I don’t know about you, but the night of the Tony’s had a very special meaning to me. ”The Normal Heart”, a show about a group of friends who refused to let doctors, politicians and the press ignore the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, won three Tony Awards. Ellen Barkin won for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play; John Benjamin Hickey won for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play; and the play won Best Revival of a play.
In his acceptance speech, playwright Larry Kramer said, “To gay people everywhere, whom I love so, ‘The Normal Heart’ is our history. I could not have written it had not so many of us so needlessly died. Learn from it and carry on the fight. Let them know that we are a very special people, an exceptional people and that our day will come.”
I found his speech thoughtful and empowering, and I’m seeing it on Wednesday night.
