Every December, we make an annual pilgrimage to the New York Botanical Garden’s annual Holiday Train Show. It has become a special and memorable experience for all of us. When our kids were babies, their eyes popped out at all the moving trains buzzing around the room. As toddlers, they started to chase the trains and watch the lights flashing around the room. In recent years, now that they’re ages 6 and 7, they have begun to ask about the incredible landmarks scattered through the exhibit and they’ve begun to “ooh” and “aah” the remarkable displays as much as we do. The holiday season wouldn’t be the same for any of us without the Botanical Garden’s Train Show.
It all starts this Saturday and runs until January 9th. You won’t want to miss this unique experience. The show has become a cherished seasonal tradition for families, not just in New York, but across the country. You will marvel as G-scale model trains puff along a half-mile of track in and around the 140 landmark buildings constructed entirely of natural materials: nuts, tree bark, fruits, pine cones, and leaves, housed within the warmth of the historic Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. There is so much detail that goes into the models. For any child who knows the city, it’s so much fun to follow the exhibit and name the historic places that we see every day, including the Empire State Building, Grand Central, the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges, the Chrysler Building, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim, just to name a few. It’s also fun to guess the names of the structures before your child looks at their nameplates, particularly for older kids.
It’s truly a New Yorker’s defining moment, and the experience will just add to the pride that you have in this incredible city that we live in. And now, right here on the Culture Mom, you can enter to win FOUR tickets to the NYC Botanical Garden’s Annual Train Show!
