Support Women With Breast Cancer with CancerCare. It’s Easy and Important.

I'm particularly excited to write this post because it's SO important. I also just happened to go for my yearly mammogram, so breast cancer is definitely on my mind as I nervously await my own results. As a thyroid cancer survivor, I don't take these exams lightly AT ALL, and neither should you. My mother is a lung cancer survivor and she's been in remission for several years. But we both know the fight is never over. This may be a sponsored post but I feel very passionate about this cause as I have known too many women who have fallen to breast Read More

Lessons From ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

als challenge

As someone who’s made many efforts over the years to raise both awareness and money for social causes and issues (i.e. St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Women in Prison, the Mothers of Haiti, Room to Grow and others), I have been fascinated by the extreme success of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. At first it was kind of amusing to see the videos pop up by various friends in my Facebook feed and I didn't see what was coming even then, when I had no idea the idea would take off to this extent. But over the last week, as celebrity videos started to appear, Read More

A Reunion of Holocaust Survivors from the Lodz Ghetto

Salomea Kape

A few weeks ago, I had an extraordinary experience that I feel I have neglected to tell. I have been hesitant to tell this story for a few reasons. For one thing, I haven't been sure of the outlet in which to feature it. I have wondered if the Culture Mom is the right venue for a story of such an important, historical nature. I often write about plays I see, trips I see, my children. Is this the right forum for such a story? Well, to answer that question, this blog is anything that I want it to be, so I have to say it is. For another thing, I didn't Read More

6 Degrees of Separation: Women’s Prison Association/Orange is the New Black Twitter Party

WOMENS PRISON ASSOCIATION

I'm hosting a twitter party for one my clients, She Speaks, next week and it's a VERY special one for me. Why? Six degrees of separation. You see, three years ago, I produced my first Listen to Your Mother Show in NYC. Alysia Reiner was in the cast.  Alysia joined the cast of my favorite show, Orange is the New Black. Alysia invited me to an event to benefit he Women's Prison Association (WPA)  this past year and I met their team. I  produced LYTM again and we chose WPA as our chosen charity. As a member of the Netstream #StreamTeam, I have interviewed Read More

Finding Out About Tweens & Puberty w/ HelloFlo

Hello Flo

I had the most interesting conversation with HelloFlo founder Naama Bloom and Dr. Cara Netterson who works with American Girl on their puberty books. I encountered HelloFlo's video, The Camp Gyno, last year when it was released and immediately fell in love with its premise of making sure our daughters are prepared for their periods. Did you see it? It was wonderful and went viral really fast. If not, watch it now. HelloFlo founder Naama Bloom spent the bulk of her career at American Express in marketing. After moving on as an entrepreneur, one Read More

Sheryl Sandberg’s “Ban Bossy” Campaign

Ban Bossy

Did you know that between elementary and high school, girls’ self-esteems drops 3.5 times more than boys? This profound stat can have a detrimental effect on a young girl's future. That’s what Facebook COO and founder of the Lean In movement Sheryl Sandberg thinks and she wants to do something about it. Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Girl Scouts USA CEO Anna Maria Chávez have joined forces with her to launch "Ban Bossy" to ban the word “bossy” as a way to describe young girls, stating that its use leads to negative self esteem and Read More

Thoughts on Women, Travel and More

thoughts on women and travel

Yesterday I went to celebrate International Women's Day at a new conference that was held in downtown Manhattan called Women's Travel Fest. It was a day of discussion meant to inspire and prompt women to travel. I went because as an avid traveler and writer, I was excited to hear women talk about my favorite subject and watch others get as empowered about the topic as I already am. I recently hosted a twitter party on this very subject and know that statistics prove that women are anything but afraid to travel in 2014. These are a few of the stats Read More

Giving Women in Prison a 2nd Chance

WOMENS PRISON ASSOCIATION

This post was written by Alysia Reiner, actress, producer, writer, spokesperson, activist and someone I am proud to call my friend. Alysia is currently starring on Orange is the New Black, one of my favorite shows, about a group of women in prison.  Today she graciously lends her voice to the blog to talk about a project that's close to her heart. This has been a year of crazy gratitude for so much. Nothing like pretending to work in a prison to make it real. I feel so insanely blessed, and at the same time, more aware than ever of the inequities Read More

Giving Tuesday with Mommy Nearest

mommy nearest

I've written about a lot about advocacy and how helping others is an important part of my family life. I once read that it’s important to start teaching how to give back at a very young age, as young as age 3, and that it’s best to treat the act of helping as a family activity. I actually started to encourage the act of volunteering when they were both less than a year old. Every week we would go to an old age home and play on a rug in the middle of a roomful of the elderly.  It filled my heart with pride knowing how much our presence was appreciated Read More

Passports with Purpose: Supporting Education

Passports with Purpose

Two years ago I participated in a travel blogger's fundraiser called Passports with Purpose.  The goal was to raise money for Room to Read, an organization I have close attachment to as I work for them in my local chapter. The program funded the establishment of two libraries in under-served communities in Zambia.  The program put books in the hands of kids that don’t have them and it was very, very rewarding. Last year I wasn't involved, but they raised money to build wells in Haiti with Water.org. Not only did they exceed their fundraising goal of Read More
