Talk the Talk, Walk the Walk and Save a Life

moonwalk cancer

Last year I came face to face with a form of cancer that struck a close family member.  It was not breast cancer, it was lung cancer.  For the first time in my life, I was hit with the awful reality that I could potentially lose this person, the single most important person in my life.  I was faced with the fact that it would spread like fire, even after it was removed, which it was. Now this family member and I live in fear that it could come back, and it's not a pleasant way to live.  We will live like this for the next five years until Read More

Give Moms a Thought this Mother’s Day

every mother counts

Pregnancy is the number one cause of death for women ages 15 - 19 in the developing world. This is not myth, it is fact. And we can help. Christy Turlington Burns, the founder of Every Mother Counts (ENC), is a great example of someone who has seized the opportunity to further the cause of preventing maternal deaths around the world and her organization has created a new campaign that she hopes to further her cause not just now, but all year long called "Give Mom a Thought". Remember when your Mom said, “It’s the thought that counts,” Read More

When Water is a Women’s Issue

WaterAid

Worldwide, nearly 800 million people lack access to safe water, while 2.5 billion live without adequate sanitation. The lack of these essential services has a huge impact on the lives of millions of women and girls around the world. Women and girls spend hours walking for water, an exhausting task that consumes 26% of women’s time in rural Africa. The water they work so hard to collect is often dirty and contaminated with deadly diseases. Water-related diseases are the third biggest killer of children in Africa. It is usually women who Read More

Help Make a Childs Wish Come True on World Wish Day, April 29th

Make a Wish

If you ever wonder how you can change a child's life from the seat in your living room, I have a few ideas for you. I first became aware of the Make-a-Wish Foundation about 15 years ago when I was working at at MTV/Nickelodeon.  A colleague of mine was very active with the cause and I knew that her work with the organization was making a real difference in children's lives.  Their work enriches the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work. Make-A-Wish was founded in 1980 after a little boy named Chris Read More

Boston: A New Reality and Talking to Your Children

save the children boston

We were traveling when we found out about the events that unfolded yesterday in Boston.  Every chance we got, we took a look at the news on our phones and caught glimpses of television sets airing the news in the airport.  Images of 9/11 instantly came to our minds as we registered each loss of life and it was too hard to fathom.  We lived in NYC in 2001, so these memories are still very real and vivid. One of my friends lost a husband, another lost a sister and many skirted death by a matter of minutes (one was late for work, another was late for a job Read More

A Mother’s Day fashionABLE Gift That Will Change Lives

FashionAble

A few months ago I read my amazing friend Liz's recount over at Mom-101 of what it was like to watch her mother run a small clothing label out of her attic when she was growing up.  She connected the story (beautifully) to a group of women that she met at the non-profit, FashionABLE while visiting Ethiopia. It's a place where all the proceeds on the scarves that they create go towards helping the artisans, not only through wages but with medical care, medicine for TB or HIV, counseling, a housing stipend, educational tools and daycare for their Read More

A Meaningful Passover (w/a Bit of Girl Power)

Screen Shot 2013-03-30 at 12.39.35 AM

This year Passover took a whole new meaning in my house.  For one thing, it's the first time my children have ever kept the holiday's strict dietary rules.  In prior years, I felt they were too young for me to change their dietary habits and I couldn't get them to eat enough Passover food to keep them going.  This year I decided that at ages 8 and 9, they could survive a week without bread, pasta and rice.  For another thing, going to Hebrew School twice a year seems to be paying off.  This is the first time they were genuinely excited to sit down at the Read More

Will I “Lean In”?

Screen Shot 2013-03-26 at 9.03.15 AM

I have to admit that I've been mystified by all the criticism of Sheryl Sandberg new "Lean In" movement. Here we have a female who's making every attempt to help women rise up and succeed and there is a large group of women (and men) criticizing her for what she's trying to do.  And why is that? She wants every little girl who people perceive as bossy to know they have leadership skills and potential. I certainly want my daughter to grow up feeling that way. I've been sitting on the sidelines watching the debate unfold online about her because she is Read More
