I’ve written about a lot about advocacy and how helping others is an important part of my family life. I once read that it’s important to start teaching how to give back at a very young age, as young as age 3, and that it’s best to treat the act of helping as a family activity.
I actually started to encourage the act of volunteering when they were both less than a year old. Every week we would go to an old age home and play on a rug in the middle of a roomful of the elderly. It filled my heart with pride knowing how much our presence was appreciated by the residents and I made it a part of our weekly routine until they started going to pre-school.
That’s what you have to do with kids. Teach them the art of volunteering and giving back. Make it a mission to act on your promises to help out in the community regularly. Don’t just talk about it. DO IT.
Giving Tuesday (#GT)is a movement to create a national day of giving to kick off the giving season added to the calendar on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The second annual GivingTuesday is coming up on December 3, 2013. It’s an annual campaign to create a national day of giving at the start of the upcoming holiday season. It celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support non-profit organizations.
This year in honor of Giving Tuesday, I’m teaming up with Mommy Nearest, a local resource guide mobile app for parents on the go who, is teaming up with 92Y & Giggle on #GivingTuesday, December 3rd, to host a clothing and toy drive for people in need. Families with their children can donate goods at any of Giggle’s 3 locations, Soho, UES and UWS, or at the 92Y. After donating, families are asked to stop by the headquarters at the 92Y to take a holiday photo in a branded MotorBooth truck. All participants who upload a photo (Twitter or Instagram) tagged “#MommyNearest” will be entered to win an annual subscription to SPARKBOX Toys ($249 value).
Here’s the low down on the event – all the information can also be found here:
Tuesday, 12/3/2013 – 7am* – 7pm (*Giggle locations open at 10am)
I’ll be at the 92nd Street Y on Tuesday morning to to take a holiday photo in a branded MotorBooth truck and talk to the founder of Mommy Nearest. I really hope to see you there!
Mommy Nearest is the most comprehensive “on-the-go” resource guide to support local parenting needs. Their community-driven rating system ensures that information is up to date and allows local parents to share insights about neighborhood favorites (or places to avoid). It’s like 24/7 support system that is always at your fingertips. With Mommy Nearest, you’ll be able to locate:
• Kid-friendly restaurants, broken down by the amenities they offer. These include high-chairs, kid’s menus and stroller-friendliness
• Changing tables/bathrooms, because accidents happen when you least expect them
• Indoor/Outdoor activities, including all playgrounds in NYC, broken down by what they offer
• The closest urgent care and pediatric emergency rooms for any actual emergencies that may happen. After all, kids will be kids.
So, remember to head to a local Giggle store this Tuesday to donate used goods (clothing or toys) to those who need it most. Bring your kids and meet me at the Y after.
Make GivingTuesday a meaningful one for you, your kids, and to others.
