Wondering how the social media landscape may change in 2013?  Could things possibly move any faster than they did in 2012?

Last night I went to a very interesting lecture at the Digital Arts Experience (DAE) in White Plains. Stephanie Schwab of Crackerjack Marketing, Rhonda Hurwitz, Social Media Consultant and Ellen Gerstein, VP Marketing at Grand Central Publishing were the speakers, I was the moderator.  I know each panelist very well and knew I was in for an informative evening and want to share some of my findings.

First I asked them what stands out in their social memory about 2012?

Trend 1: They were all very clear that 2012 was the year of the image and picture. Pinterest exploded and Instagram did, too, until the Facebook purchase.  Facebook even gets better if you share an image.  It all got MUCH more visual.

Trend 2: Mobile.  Who doesn’t do everything on the phone these days?

Trend 3: Companies are hiring professionals and are taking social media more seriously. They are approaching web sites like journalists; adding in videos/testimonial videos.

Looking ahead, here’s what to look for 2013:

Trend 1: Do what will make you memorable/stand out/don’t be afraid of the niche (across the board).

Trend 2: This is the year of the scientist! It’s the year you can’t get away with not understanding your data. For every business, you have to be able to track.

Trend 3: Twitter will remain the fastest way to connect with brands.

Trend 4:  Put your dollars where you are going to get action – it looks like it’s going to be PINTEREST.   Site traffic with the intent to browse or buy is what #Pinterest does for brands.

Trend 5: Other tools of importance: Google+ still important to have presence and the panelists agreed that people are far more serious on it than on other tools; Linked In: Recommendations more important than endorsements but increasinly important; Reddit: – on the rise; Other tools to keep an eye on: Path, Appnet, Google analytics, Captain Dash.

Check out this great Storify from the evening to see and hear more.
