A Message from Women in the World: Be Fearless, Committed and Audacious

DSC01117

I was lucky and privileged this past weekend to be contacted by Liberty Mutual Insurance, a sponsor of the third annual Women in the World summit, to attend the summit as their guest.  Hosted by Tina Brown, editor in chief of Newsweek & The Daily Beast, the summit brings together women leaders and activists from around the globe to address the most urgent challenges facing women and girls.  I was there to catch the premiere of one their films about a woman who embraces responsibility and impacts change, and I also got an all access pass to … [Read more...]

Learning from Friends Who Help Others: Hot Cocoa for Charity

Evan Greenberg

When my eldest was two years old, I made a friend at her pre-school that I will have for life, Elisa Greenberg.  Our friendship is as genuine as it gets and I learn so much from her as a person and as a mother. It was right around that time when our kids were wee small that she started having an annual hot chocolate and sweet fundraiser in her garage, raising money for important causes.  She's the type of mom who wants to teach her kids about giving back, and thus this annual tradition began. It started small.  A group from our pre-school and … [Read more...]

The “Bully” Controversy

bully

If you haven't heard about the controversy surrounding the upcoming film, BULLY, you've been under a rock.  Last week its studio, the Weinstein Co., lost its appeal to overturn the movie's R rating, falling one vote short of the 2/3 requirement.  Harvey Weinstein was so upset that he claimed he was considering taking a “leave of absence” from submitting his films to the MPAA for ratings. That earned a fresh wave of publicity for the film, as well as a significant spike in conversation around the issue of bullying and a massive 100x increase in … [Read more...]

A Life Free From Hunger with Save the Children

Save the Children

This morning I headed to the Millennium Hotel near the United Nations to hear a very special talk co-hosted by Save the Children in support of the U.N. Secretary General’s Every Woman Every Child movement for maternal, newborn and child health with a group of other bloggers from MamaDrama.   The session was empowering as we heard from leaders in the movement to eliminate hunger from around the world. The breakfast and discussion were being held to launch a new global report  “A Life Free from Hunger: Tackling Child Malnutrition,” marking a … [Read more...]

Remembering Daniel Pearl, My Friend and Hero

OB-RQ251_0202da_DV_20120202110953

Ten years ago this month, millions became witnesses to the kidnapping and murder of the journalist Daniel Pearl at the hands of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, an Al Qaeda operative also alleged to be behind the 9/11 attacks. Pearl had recently been named the South Asia Bureau Chief for the Wall Street Journal; he was in Pakistan retracing the steps of the so-called “shoe bomber,” Richard Reid, when he was kidnapped. Pearl thought he was heading for an interview with Sheikh Mubarak Ali Gilani.  He never returned and his final days made international … [Read more...]

Social Good Cause of the Week: Malaria No More

malaria no more

I'm always looking for a good social good campaign and Malaria No More's "Dream Big Campaign" is certainly that and is hence my social good cause of the week (my NEW Tuesday feature).  Malaria No More is an effort to help end malaria deaths in Africa and help children achieve their dreams. I saw Mandy Moore speak about the danger of Malaria at the 92nd Street Social Good Conference last year and it's a cause that we all need to get behind. Malaria robs more children of their dreams than any other disease in Africa, killing a child every minute. Yet, … [Read more...]

My Personal and Professional Achievements in 2011

come closer

At the end of last year I wrote about how social media had opened doors for me that I never imagined would open.  This year, that continued and there were many wonderful opportunities that presented themselves as a result of my work.  To name a few: *My work at Ruckus Media Group has continued to thrive and I have been able to oversee their campaign as a partner of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  For the last six weeks, we have donated a portion of sales to children who need it most and I am very proud of our work. *I launched a … [Read more...]

Candle Seven: Growing Up a Fish Out Of Water

Hanukkah with Kids

When I was growing up in Atlanta, there were less than 100,000 Jewish residents in a city of several million.  My parents had moved there from Philadelphia, and they retained much of that Northern Jewishness that set us apart growing up.  Much of that was cultural - bagels and lox on Sunday mornings, for example, instead of grits and fried chicken. We were members of the Temple, the biggest Reform shul in the city, and my sisters and I went to Sunday School and were had Bat Mitzvahs and confirmations.  We were involved members of the community, and … [Read more...]
