A Night Out at Vatan in NYC and Experiencing Food From Gujurat

vatan

Photo courtesy of Vatan.Last week I ventured to Murray Hill to an Indian restaurant I've never been to called Vatan. The experience ended up being an absolute delight and one that I recommend to all of you. Vatan is a traditional Indian restaurant, only it is very unique. They only offer a prix fixe thali style menu ($34 per person), which if you have never had this type of meal, it's a series of small dishes and whatever more you like of each dish, as you can order as much as you like. The cuisine is distinct as it features only vegetarian dishes of Read More

What Brooklyn Families is All About

Brooklyn_Families_Tour_David_Bowie_is_20180623_DEV_152_Elena_Olivo_DSC_8813-General Use JPEG

A few weeks ago I received the most unexpected, marvelous invitation to the Brooklyn Museum to find out more about their program Brooklyn Families. Coming from Westchester, I knew the museum would be a bit of a hike very early on a Saturday morning, but my curiosity was peaked about what the museum is doing to engage families. I am always looking for ways to engage my own children in art. They pull me away from museums; I want to pull them in. Brooklyn Families Another big draw: a personal tour of David Bowie is, an exhibit about who was perhaps my Read More

A First Time Theater Experience for Newly Arrived Immigrants at the New Victory Theater: “Pss Pss”

New Vic_PssPss_(c)Sylvie Bosc copy

This past weekend I had the unique experience of watching a newly arrived family from Afghanistan watch their very first theatrical play, in the very first theater they had ever sat in - on Broadway, but not a Broadway show. Still, the effect of watching them enjoy their first show was moving, and quite magical. It also helped that it was at one of my favorite theaters for children in NYC, the New Victory Theater on 42nd Street. The show we would see, "Pss Pss," hailed from Switzerland, as the bulk of their programming is from around the world. Like Read More

Guest post: Review of “Puffs” at New World Stages

puffs

Guest writer Liat Ginsberg is a mother and former journalist for the Israeli newspaper, Maariv. She has taught at the Film and Media Department at Hunter College. If you or you kids are fans of  the Harry Potter series, the play Puffs is for you. In addition, if your kids have never read the book or watched Harry Potter movies (like my 8 year-old twins), then the play “Puffs” is also for you. The truth is this play may be more for kids than for adults. My kids enjoyed every minute. They could not stop giggling. At times, I was wondering why do they Read More

big apple circus

This a guest post written by writer Lisa Gerstel-Zach, a diverse and seasoned executive who has spent her career in Children’s and Family Entertainment via Publishing, Live Events and Broadcast before stepping back to take a much earned reprieve from the Corporate world in order to reinvent herself and remember why she moved to New York. She lives in the latest hip neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn with her husband and daughter. Friday afternoon and it is like negative 40 degrees out, what could be better than bundling up in 12 layers and heading Read More

Restaurant Review: An Indian Feast at Benares Tribeca

benarestribeca

Tucked away in the heart of Tribeca sits an Indian restaurant that demands a visit. If you are as much an Indian food connoisseur as I am, you need to know about Benares Tribeca. I had an inspiring meal there last night that I am eager to tell you about. Benares Tribeca, which is located on Murray Street downtown, is known for honoring the 28 states of India, specifically Northern India. The restaurant is modern, with banquette seating and hardwood floors, red wall accent pieces, and a bar with a lounge area. I was surprised by how nice and trendy the Read More

Review: “The Play That Goes Wrong” is Perfect for Teens

playthatgoeswrong

The Play That Goes Wrong officially opened on Broadway on April 2 at The Lyceum Theatre, after a successful West End run in London. It's a play I've been curious about for some time, so I was thrilled to get the opportunity to review the play this week, with my 14 year-old daughter in tow. The fun started as soon as we sat down as some of the cast members were interacting with the audience, goofing around. This was very indicative of the sense of humor and type of pranks that would be cast for the next two hours over the course of the show. Read More

An Extraordinary Culinary Experience at the Upper West Side’s Machiavelli

Last night I had the opportunity to experience a meal at Machiavelli, located on the Upper West Side on the corner of 85th Street. This restaurant is the passion product of restauranteur Nathalie de la Fontaine, who spent nearly 20 years as the owner of the West Village’s La Focaccia prior to opening  this establishment, which is about five or six years old. To say that Machiavelli is one of the Upper West Side's best kept secrets is an understatement. I was moved by the restaurant's ambiance, its passion for the arts (there are fine paintings on the Read More

Review: Anastasia on Broadway, a Musical Display of #GirlPower

anastasia broadway

I must admit that I went in to Anastasia, a new Broadway musical, with low expectations, for no reason. I just never know how big animated motion pictures based on heroines based in another country (in this case, Russia) like this will fare on the Broadway stage. But I took my teenage daughter, and together, we went in with open hearts, ready for a play about a young heroine. Neither of us knew the story or quite what to expect. The outcome? We both loved the fact that the play focused on a strong, young woman with excellent morals and a kind heart. Read More
