A 1980s Film Binge Fest on Netflix

pretty in pink

I'm a child of the 1980s and the pop culture from that time period stands out in my memory and will forever more.  I loved the music, TV shows and the movies...ahhh, the movies. Films back then were kind of ground-breaking. They delved into topics of teenage-dom and adulthood that had never been touched on. Some were hits and we all saw them over and over. Some just wasted away into oblivion and returned as cult favorites many years later. I've spent the last few months pulling some out of my memory's list and have been re-watching them with my Read More

Giving Tuesday with Mommy Nearest

mommy nearest

I've written about a lot about advocacy and how helping others is an important part of my family life. I once read that it’s important to start teaching how to give back at a very young age, as young as age 3, and that it’s best to treat the act of helping as a family activity. I actually started to encourage the act of volunteering when they were both less than a year old. Every week we would go to an old age home and play on a rug in the middle of a roomful of the elderly.  It filled my heart with pride knowing how much our presence was appreciated Read More

Defending GoldieBlox and LEGO Loving Girls

goldieblox

My daughter and I just watched the new ad for GoldieBlox toys (click above to watch) together and I asked her to tell me what she thought it was trying to say at the end. Her response, direct from her mouth: "Girls want more than pink toys.  Girls can do anything they want when they grow up. Oh, and we have a brain!" Amen! What better message is there out in the world for my 10 year old daughter than this? As a staunch feminist, I try my best to encourage her to do and be anything in the world that she wants, but right out of my womb she wore pink Read More

Cool Rainbow Loom Tips

rainbowloomtips

I love the Rainbow Loom.  It's artistic, creative, stimulating, thoughtful, time-consuming (in a good way), educational and, most of all, fun.  My kids can spend hours upon hours making different designs and they're often at their most focused.  When they first got their kits, they read instructions and made simple pattens but over time they've started to watch instructional videos and are now coming up with the most amazing concoctions.  My husband and I proudly wear our bracelets to work everyday and we both get questioned constantly by our colleagues Read More

Sleep Away Camp Jitters No More

Sleep Away Camp Jitters No More

The minute my daughter was born, I started to dream about sending her to a Jewish sleep away camp.  Not because I wanted to shake her, but because I knew we wouldn’t be sending her to Jewish day school and I wanted her to embrace our religion in a different way.  Also, because I know from personal experience what kind of long-lasting impact it would have on her. Growing up in Atlanta, it was more important to send your kids to Jewish sleep away camp.  We were a small community and I was one of only a handful of Jews in my grade.  Camp was the best way Read More

Feeling Lost in Suburbia

lost in suburbia

I left NYC for the suburbs over ten years ago. I was a real city girl.  You couldn't get me to leave town if you tried. On weekends, I was off to Central Park, to the theater, to hear poetry slams. to eat sushi and walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Then I met my husband, we danced around town for four years, got married, got pregnant and decided our one-bedroom on the Upper West Side was too small. We knew it was time to leave the city. However, I didn't really think about the major changes that lied ahead of me.  Life was about to change Read More

Giveaway: American Girl’s The Body Book for Girls (5 copies)

Screen Shot 2013-04-10 at 1.03.47 AM

My daughter turned 10 today and we are entering the dark abyss of what could be tough conversations about her changing body.  I want to teach her to make the right dietary choices, explain that growing hair under her armpits, teach her about hygiene and teach her to know what to expect when she's not expecting all these changes to transpire at some point in the next few years. There are also social pressures and situations that could impact her body image and self-esteem and I want her to understand and take them full on when they occur. When I got a Read More
