The haunting, evocative music storybook Angel Heart, released in September as a deluxe CD package, makes its New York premiere as a live multimedia family concert narrated by actor Chris Noth at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall this Monday, October 21. Hailed as “a fairy tale for the digital age” (Wall Street Journal), Angel Heart enjoyed a sold-out world premiere at UC Berkeley’s Cal Performances earlier this month. With a new story by best-selling children’s fantasy writer Cornelia Funke, interspersed with lullabies and songs arranged for voices, cellos and mandolin, Angel Heart builds on the tradition of musical stories like Peter and the Wolf. San Francisco Classical Voice called the premiere “magnetic” and “magical,” and the San Francisco Chronicle noted that composer Luna Pearl Woolf’s music was “inventive and arresting.” The project’s performers are cellist Matt Haimovitz, his all-cello ensemble Uccello, and vocalists Frederica von Stade, Lisa Delan,Daniel Taylor, and Bruce Rameker, with guest appearances at Zankel Hall by mandolin player Avi Avital and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. The stage director is Brian Staufenbiel.

Robert P. Commanday opened his San Francisco Classical Voice review of the Berkeley premiere:

“After all the hundreds of musicals that have gone down the pike, take heart, there are still unlimited ways to tell a story in music. A very different way of telling, Angel Heart, charmed its first audience, of adults and children (lots of them) in UC Berkeley’s Hertz Hall last Sunday afternoon. … The accompaniments were all imaginatively recreated, re-harmonized, the voicing and interplay of the cello ensemble’s parts achieving a constant play of effects, shimmering, haunting, often with gorgeous obbligato melodies. This cast much of the magic that was evoked in the telling of the story.”

Chris Noth, best known as Sex and the City’s “Mr. Big,” will appear as guest narrator at Zankel Hall on October 21 in New York. He has scored multiple Golden Globe nods for his key roles in Sex and the City and two other hit television series: Law & Order and The Good Wife.  Noth’s most recent film is Lovelace, with Amanda Seyfried and Peter Sarsgaard. His family-oriented work includes the lead role in the comedy short Tooth Fairy.

Angel Heart, a music storybook – the live performances, deluxe CD package, and forthcoming app – combine Funke’s text with Woolf’s original music, and arrangements of new and traditional songs by Gordon Getty, Jake Heggie, Engelbert Humperdinck, Lennon-McCartney, David Sanford, Lewis Spratlan, and Woolf. Its distinctive visual component is provided by creative studio Mirada, which specializes in integrating classic storytelling with new technologies. Founded by director Guillermo del Toro and cinematographer Guillermo Navarro, of Pan’s Labyrinth and Pacific Rim fame, along with Grammy Award-winning director and producer Matthew Cullen and Javier Jimenez, Mirada recently won a Cannes Silver Lion Award for MirrorWorld, a previous Funke collaboration. The studio’s striking visuals will be projected live at Angel Heart’s New York premiere.

The project was born when composer Luna Pearl Woolf and soprano Lisa Delan discovered a shared “dream of lullabies.” Together, they compiled a selection of songs reflecting their musical loves – some by composers ranging from Engelbert Humperdinck to Lennon and McCartney, others traditional folk songs and lullabies. Arranged for the intimate and sumptuous sounds of an all-cello ensemble, these songs were interwoven with original music of a more virtuosic nature that Woolf – best known for Après Moi, le Déluge, her “unsentimental but moving tribute” (New York Times) to the victims of Hurricane Katrina – composed herself.

In a playground of paper, light, music and magic, a whimsical story about childhood friendship comes to life when one young girl meets a particularly sly and silly fellow—her shadow! Collaboratively created by Zoë Barry, Dave Brown, Geoff Cobham, Roz Hervey, Nathan O’Keefe, Astrid Pill and Bob Weatherly, Me and My Shadow is directed by Dave Brown, Roz Hervey and Geoff Cobham and stars Sarah Brokensha and Tim Overton.

Tony Award-winning playwright Rupert Holmes’ stage adaptation of A Time to Kill, John Grisham’s best-selling novel, will open on Broadway on Sunday, October 20, 2013, at the John Golden Theatre (252 West 45th Street). This new Broadway play holds the distinction of being the first-ever John Grisham property to be adapted for the stage. Ethan McSweeny will direct, with previews beginning Saturday, September 28th. Horne, John Procaccino, Tijuana Ricks and Lee Sellars will star.

A Time to Kill, the popular courtroom drama, tells the emotionally charged, now-iconic story of a young, idealistic lawyer, Jake Brigance, defending a black man, Carl Lee Hailey, for taking the law into his own hands following an unspeakable crime committed against his young daughter. Their small Mississippi town is thrown into upheaval, and Jake finds himself arguing against the formidable district attorney, Rufus Buckley, and under attack from both sides of a racially divided city. This drama is a thrilling courtroom battle where the true nature of what is right and what is moral are called into question.

My daughter turned 10 today and we are entering the dark abyss of what could be tough conversations about her changing body.  I want to teach her to make the right dietary choices, explain that growing hair under her armpits, teach her about hygiene and teach her to know what to expect when she’s not expecting all these changes to transpire at some point in the next few years. There are also social pressures and situations that could impact her body image and self-esteem and I want her to understand and take them full on when they occur.

When I got a copy of  American Girl’s Care and Keeping of You 2, my daughter and I both locked ourselves up in her room for several nights and snuggled next to each other in her bed to read it. The book is designed for girls 10 and up and addresses physical transformations and emotions that girls face when they hit puberty.  Some of the topics were a bit much for my daughter, like menstruation which she’s not very ready to think about, but other topics were of interest.  Her body is rapidly changing and she was curious about bras, growth, pimples and hormones.  Some of it was over her head but the discussions were good and healthy and the book’s content is dealt with tastefully. We may have to pick it up next year and have a re-read!

I’m thrilled to be giving away FIVE copies of the book!

To win, tell me if you’ve had personal conversations with your growing girl and how it went.

Hyde Park

Any movie starring Bill Murray and Laura Linney has GREAT written all over it. I’m looking forward to seeing Hyde Park On Hudson.  That’s why I’m thrilled to be giving away a night for one reader to see it and have a night at the movies.

Together they;re starring in a historical tale that uniquely explores the all-too-human side of one of history’s iconic leaders, FDR. Blending literate wit and drama, Hyde Park on Hudson is directed by Roger Michell from a screenplay by Richard Nelson.

In June 1939, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (played by Murrary) readies to host the King and Queen of England (Samuel West and Olivia Colman) for a weekend at the Roosevelt home at Hyde Park on Hudson, in upstate New York – marking the first-ever visit of a reigning British monarch to America. As Britain faces imminent war with Germany, the royals are desperately looking to FDR for U.S. support.

But international affairs must be juggled with the complexities of FDR’s domestic establishment, as his wife Eleanor (Olivia Williams), mother Sara (Elizabeth Wilson), and secretary Missy (Elizabeth Marvel) will all play a part in making the royal weekend an unforgettable one.

Seen through the eyes of Daisy (played by Linney), Franklin’s neighbor and intimate, the weekend will produce not only a special relationship between two great nations, but, for Daisy – and through her, for us all – a deeper understanding of the mysteries of love and friendship.

Sound like the next movie on your list?

Venus in Fur“A play so good it hurts.  90 minutes of good, kinky fun.”  – The New York Times

Clearly, this giveaway is not for kids.  Yes, a lot of people (particularly publicists) seem to think as The Culture Mom, I’m all about the kids. They refer to me as “mommy blogger” and send me information about everything kid-related.  Little do they realize that I am SO much more than that.  I love a good night out with my husband or my girl-friends, sinking my teeth into a show about and only for adults.

And VENUS IN FUR by David Ives is just that.  Now, I have to admit that I have not seen it yet (I will). But I hear it’s VERY steamy, and VERY exciting.  The show goes behind the scenes at an audition, where a man (a playwright) and a woman (actress) blur the lines between fantasy and reality, seduction and power, love and sex.  Hugh Dancy and Nina Arianda star in this show, and I will not anything else, but I think that it’s a hot ticket!

You can enter to win a pair of  tickets to VENUS IN FUR right here! Here’s how to enter:

1) You must be a Culture Mom Facebook Fan and a Venus in Fur Facebook Fan to enter.

Then finish the following sentence in the comment section below: “I want to see this show because…”

YOU MUST LEAVE YOUR CONTACT INFO – Twitter or Email in the entry to be considered!

2) For a second entry, leave a second comment after tweeting the following:
