A Mother-Son Weekend in the Catskills

TriptoCatskills

My son and I recently spent some time in the Catskills. We basically jumped in our car and headed to the mountains for some R&R and a bit of bonding. He loves to ski, so knowing that was part of our plan was a big motivator for him. The Catskills is an interesting getaway choice because it offers so much to do for both children and adults, and we were both up to the challenge of checking it out. Equipped with a full tank of gas, we set out from Westchester for two days of adventure with a group of writers and their children. Where We Stayed Our Read More

A Solo Trip to Hawks Cay Resort

hawkscaypalmtree

Solo travel can be so... Empowering. Restorative. Enlightening. My recent trip to the Hawks Cay Resort was all of those things and more. For just a few days, I left my family at home, well taken care of, and went to cover the new renovations at Hawks Cay Resort. The resort is on Duck Key, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Key Largo is 46 miles north, and Key West is 61 miles south. It was a 2-2-1/2 hour journey from Miami, where I flew into. For a few days, I'd explore the hotel with a group of writers and have experiences Read More

An Electrifying Experience: IlluminOcean in Dana Point, California

IllumiOcean

I just came back from Dana Point, California, where I experienced something very magical called IlluminOcean. A massive lover of Christmas lights, I had a feeling I'd be memorized, but I actually underestimated the event's enormity. Billed a “wonderland by the sand,” this new installation features 22 giant ocean-themed lighting sculptures with over 500,000 LED lights along a one-mile stretch on the harbor. It's really the perfect outing for a family and seriously worth the trip. Kids can even wear 3D glasses for a holographic look. Forty Nights of Read More

Hotel Review: The Garland in North Hollywood

PicMonkey Collage - garland

My daughter and I just got back from a stay at The Garland in North Hollywood. Billed as "Hollywood Glamour Meet Retro-Chic," the hotel is undergoing a massive renovation to achieve this image and it was clear from what has been completed that they're on their way. This family-owned establishment was named after the late Beverly Garland, a famous film and TV actress. She was responsible for its interior décor, which is a retro-modern oasis surrounded by gardens and palm tress. The result is quintessential Hollywood, with pictures of film stars Read More

Eating Out with Kids in Long Beach, California

parkers lighthouse

Long Beach is full of child-friendly restaurants. On my recent trip with my (picky) tween, we sampled new foods, tried new versions of our existing favorites and munched out on seafood. Here's a selection of where we went: The Attic on Broadway - Housed in an edifice from the 1920s, this family-owned, funky neighborhood eatery is full of local art and a lot of history. I was told that the one of its rooms is even haunted. There's something for everyone on the menu - from mac & cheese and nutella french toast for kids to steak to salad to the Read More

A Trip to the New York Wine Country

welliesandwinecollage

I recently traveled to the North Fork, New York Wine Country, via Cross Sound Ferry. The ferry was a mode of transportation I honestly hadn't considered in the past, but boy, were my expectations surpassed. It was efficient, restful and great value. The trip eliminated hours of driving, and the views from the boat were so impressive. The North Fork, once thought of a long drive on the Long Island Expressway, where you can sit for hours at a time during the summer, became more accessible, and now that I've been there, I can't wait to go back. Walks of New York Presents: A Walking Tour for the Food Obsessed

pagani

Confession: I'm not a foodie. I don't follow world renowned chefs and I don't eat at their restaurants. My kids watch cooking shows on the Food Network and from time to time, I watch with them. But I do know New York City. I've been living here a long time, and I feel the city's pulse. When I was invited on a walking tour, hosted by Walks of New York, celebrating its culture and history from the perspective of one of the country’s top chefs and restaurateurs, Mario Batali, I didn't hesitate. Batali has his home base in Greenwich Village, and I'd heard Read More
