Review: A Contemporary Pinocchio at New Victory

pinocchionewvictory

I'm mad about the productions brought to the NYC stage by my friends at the New Victory Theater. I've been blogging about them since the beginning of TheCultureMom in early 2010. I always know I’m going to get high-quality, innovative and completely original programming and bring it into the creative minds of my children.  Literally every production is mind-blowing. They ooze with talent and creativity, often from around the world. The New Victory Theater's latest production, PINOCCHIO, making its U.S. premiere at The New Victory Theater through March Read More

Review: A Happy End at the Abingdon Theatre

ahappyend

When I got the invite to A HAPPY END, a play by Iddo Netanyaho, a physician and playwright who happens to be the Israeli Prime Minister's brother, I accepted immediately. I tend to gravitate toward Holocaust themed films, plays and TV shows. In 2015, I feel it is moe important than ever to be reminded what happened, as Anti-Semitism is taking hold in places not so very far away, like in Paris and other parts of Europe. The play is appearing at the Abingdon Theatre, in an off-Broadway run through March, and is about a Jewish family in Berlin Read More

Guest Post: Review of The Light Princess at The New Victory Theater

thelightprincess2

Have you ever seen a six years old reaction to an adults kissing? Well, sit in the play, The Light Princess at the New Victory Theater, and you’ll get dozens of kids screaming, “ewweeeee”. Before the kiss, you’ll hear the kids asking each other frantically, “Are they going to kiss?” and when they kiss, many of them will turn their heads and refuse to look at the "scary" kiss. This musical, performed at the New Victory Theater by the A.R.T. Institute at Harvard follows the journey of a young princess cursed to live without gravity, based on the Read More

Review: Brooklynite at the Vineyard Theatre

Brooklynite_Keyart poster photo by Jordan Hollender copy

Today I experienced one of those "only in NYC" experiences: BROOKLYNITE, a new show playing at the Vineyard Theatre. The show has a lot of star power behind it - book by Peter Lerman and Michael Mayer (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Spring Awakening), music and lyrics by Peter Lerman, with characters created by Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman. The show opens this 2/25 and plays for a limited engagement through Sunday, March 22nd. I found it to be electrifying, vibrant and incredibly unique, akin to when I saw Rent in its early days playing the off-Broadway Read More

Giveaway: On the Town on Broadway

onthetown

When I think of certain films I was introduced to as a young girl, I can’t help but smile. One of those films was ON THE TOWN, a musical with music by Leonard Bernstein and book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green and amazing talent such as Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra. My parents took me and my sisters to see it at a repertory film house in downtown Atlanta. For two hours, we were transported to the city of NYC with a group of sailors (Gabey, Chip and Ozzie) galavanting for 24 hours on their leave through music and dance. I saw the play later in Read More

Review: Constellations on Broadway, a MTC Production

constellations

I did something very impulsive the other day. I went to a matinee on a Wednesday afternoon, chucking all my responsibilities (work/kids/etc.) and dashed into the city to see Constellations, a Manhattan Theatre Club production, written by Nick Payne. With a 70-minute running time, I could make it home in time for the afternoon busy-ess of having two tween aged children. As a thespian, I was excited and the idea of doing something so frivolous during the week gave me chills. As an avid, addicted watcher of The Affair on Showtime at this very moment, the Read More

Guest Post: Review of Fancy Nancy Splendiferous Christmas

fancynancychristmas

When you first read Fancy Nancy to your young daughter, you may have asked yourself, "Do I really want my daughter to put so much emphasis on her look at such young age?  Is she going to give me hard time when we buy clothing? Should I start with French classes or is Chinese a better choice?" But when you watch the play, Fancy Nancy Splendiferous Christmas, which Vital Theatre Company adapted from the Jane O’Connor book, with illustrations by Robin Peiss Glasser, you will realize that Fancy Nancy is not too fancy and has is someone with many good Read More

Review: Love Letters on Broadway

loveletters

When I was offered tickets to Love Letters by A.R. Gurney on Broadway, I honestly didn't know what to do. Which rotating cast would I choose? It was an abundance of riches: Carol Burnett, Mia Farrow, Candice Bergen, Brian Dennehy, Alan Alda, Anjelica Huston, Martin Sheen, Stacy Keach and Diana Rigg. They are all masters in their own right and it would be an honor to see any of them perform on stage. I ended up choosing Candice Bergen and Alan Alda. She plays Melissa Gardiner, he plays Andrew Makepeace Ladd III. The pair just extended their current run Read More

Giveaway: Love Letters on Broadway

loveletters

Andrew Makepeace Ladd III wrote his first letter to Melissa Gardner to tell her she looked like a lost princess. They were both seven years old. For the next fifty years, through personal triumphs and despair, through wars and marriages and children and careers, they poured out the secrets of their hearts to each other. They defied a fate that schemed to keep them apart, and lived – through letters – for the one most meaningful thing, their undying love for each other. A.R. Gurney's 1988 play, LOVE LETTERS, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, based on Read More
