Giving Women in Prison a 2nd Chance

WOMENS PRISON ASSOCIATION
This post was written by Alysia Reiner, actress, producer, writer, spokesperson, activist and someone I am proud to call my friend.

Alysia is currently starring on Orange is the New Black, one of my favorite shows, about a group of women in prison.  Today she graciously lends her voice to the blog to talk about a project that’s close to her heart.

This has been a year of crazy gratitude for so much. Nothing like pretending to work in a prison to make it real. I feel so insanely blessed, and at the same time, more aware than ever of the inequities of our world, and particularly the prison system. Playing a character like FIG, who can turn a blind eye to it all, I am even more impassioned to help however I can.

During fashion week I met a wonderful jewelry designer and we decided to see how we can help. We got together and designed a piece for the WPA, and 100% of profits go to THE WOMEN’S PRISON ASSOCIATION.  The WPA does amazing things like supporting women getting ready for release through transitional planning and connection to support services in the community including WPA’s case management services. They work with families affected by incarceration through reunification support and housing for recently reunified moms and kids  as well as an intensive preventive program that works with families at risk for separation.  WPA provides a ground-breaking alternative to incarceration program that allows women to remain in their community rather than going to  state prison and provides intensive support services to address the root causes of her criminal activity.  This program, JusticeHome, is the first of its kind in NYC and likely the state.

YEP 100%.

and 100% of proceeds of locket go to WPA. YEP 100%.

And here is what it looks like:

Giving Women in Prison a 2nd Chance this Holiday Season

And the details can be found here: http://kirakirajewelry.com/products/WPA-Limited-Edition-Locket.html

It’s a locket, so perfect  to put pix of the kids in for the mom or grandma or auntie, goofy pix of you for the girlfriend or BFF, you get the drill. And if you have someone in prison you love & miss, you can put them in there too.

On the back it says EMPOWER, STRENGTHEN, CONNECT, the mission of the WPA.

The dream is just to get it out there & have as many folks as possible fall in love with it & buy it. and for me the idea of jewelry + charity = guilt free shopping heaven!

So please take a look and share with everyone you know.

What I want for the holidays is to know I have helped some incarcerated women in some small way.

Alysia is also hosting an exclusive KiraKira shopping event to benefit the WPA which will be held on December 18, 2013, and will feature the collaborated locket design as well several guest appearances from OITNB. The WPA benefit shopping event will take place from 5:00-7:00 PM in the lobby of the Carlton hotel located at 88 Madison Avenue, New York. The event will serve wine and cheese, and feature appearances from Alysia, Suz, and author of Orange is the New Black Piper Kerman as well as other cast members of the Netflix series.  I hope to see you there!
