Week 2: Middle-Aged Personal Training at Encore Fitness

This week I had my 2nd training session with Robert Lankard, one of the two founders at Encore Fitness. Like most working mothers, it took a bit of juggling to schedule my session, but after committing to this publicly, you can bet this middle-aged broad is getting to her work-out!

So, how was my first week after the training session? I watched my weight more carefully and worked out more but I wouldn’t say that I was completely moving toward my goal just yet. I need commitment and it helps having a trainer watching over me during these sessions and inbetween. Robert was terrific about keeping in touch with me, checking on my diet and exercise. It makes the whole experience incredibly motivating.

ENCORE

Robert Lankard, my trainer at Encore Fitness.

This session we started to crank it all up. After more of an introduction the first week and getting to know what I am capable of, Robert had a plan in place before I arrived. He weighed me and measured my body fat so we can track my progress the next few weeks. I’ve never been a big fan of knowing my weight, but I realize the significance of tracking my progress, so I let Robert do what he needed to do informationally and then we got down to business.

This week we really focused on my core and glutes, activating my lazy muscles using Lateral tubes, TRX, stability ball hip bridge, battling ropes, side lunges, a stability ball plank. Robert told me an early goal is to increase my balance and correct areas of weakness and overactive muscles. He’s a big proponent of the foam roller to achieve this goal and build a strong foundation. He says that once we achieve optimal stability, we can move into building more strength.

I’m the first to admit that my muscles and core have gotten lazy. Since I had kids, I haven’t focused on my personal fitness. It’s hard to find the time to concentrate on myself. Even as a WAHM, my time is limited as I often have the hours smack between drop-off and pick-up and have to use them for actual work. It’s time to pull the reigns back and make exercise a priority.

I’m ready. I want a healthy lifestyle, a healthy body. That’s the goal. I’m taking deep breaths. I’m holding in my core. I’m going towards a longer life, a healthier existence.

Meanwhile, tell me how you find time to fit fitness into your lifestyle. Please share motivation in the comments below.

Disclosure: I am receiving free personal training services from Encore Fitness NY, but all opinions are my own.

  2. That is awesome!!! Congrats on starting and good luck to you! xoxo

  3. Rena, if you are local you should come on in. First session is on me!

  4. Congratulations on taking positive steps to improve your health. I think it would be easier for me as well to have somebody there “supervising” me and keeping me on track.

  5. You go girl! I do like to exercise first thing in the morning before the rest of the day makes it impossible. I am now going to physical therapy for my sciatic injury from exercise and working on my pt exercises with the long term goal of not hurting my sciatic again!
