Are You Lost in Suburbia?

lostibsuburbia

Join us for a twitter party to celebrate the launch of Lost in Suburbia Stories, a new site that celebrates the challenges of being a mom. Are you lost in suburbia? It's much more than needing directions when you get off the Turnpike.  It happens to a lot of women after having kids, and it's easy to think you're alone. But you're not.  Talk to any mom after she's given birth and you'll find we all have a similar story. One that involves a changing identity, a new waistline and new challenges. A Two-Faced Martha Stewart

marthastewart

I just went through my inbox and counted nearly half a dozen pitches that I've received from Martha Stewart's people over the past few years. Over and over, I have explained to her publicists that I'm a culture and travel writer and that my niche does not include anything remotely domesticated or crafty. But their pitches keep coming, with constant requests to attend events and this question is asked of me regularly: "Can I send you hi-res images and you can post about the line?" Since these people are associated with the Martha Stewart brand, I've been Read More

Guest Post: Expedia + St. Jude – Travel that gives back

st. jude

The Culture Mom was invited to Memphis, Tennessee to participate in an informative few days with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The trip was sponsored by Expedia.  September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and Expedia is doing their part in all of this by launching over 150 travel giveaways and exclusive hotel coupons to help travelers support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. It’s such a great way to be a part of this amazing hospital and everything St Jude has created. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital opened in 1962 and Read More

This is the Year I Stop Procrastinating.

This is the Year I Stop Procrastinating.

This is the year I stop procrastinating. You may (or not!) have been wondering about my whereabouts these last few weeks as it's been rather quiet here.  I've been on a family trip to Ireland and England, where we spent time with close family and friends. While I did think about blogging, I chose not to write for the few weeks while I was away.  I took copious notes and have lots to talk about, but now that I'm back, where do I start? Perhaps about my trip around Ireland with the kids and our visits to several important castles, about fishing in the Read More

Disconnected in 5774

5774

I've been quiet here lately, posting the odd theater ticket giveaway or twitter update.  There are several reasons for this but the main one being that I've been traveling with my family in the country where my husband was born.  All of my children's first cousins are here in England and we've been visiting their uncles, aunts and grandmother. We also have family coming in from a great distance to spend the Jewish New Year with us. We spent a glorious week in Ireland before  coming here, which definitely gave me food for fodder, and I will be writing Read More

Where I’ve Been

Where I’ve Been

I haven't been writing as much recently and if you are an avid reader, which I hope you are, I thought I'd let you know where I've been and where else you can find me when there is nothing new here. Other than binging on the Netflix series, Orange is the New Black, catching shows like Matilda, The Assembled Parties and Shakespeare in the Park and hanging out at the pool and beach with my kids, here's what I've been up to. I'm honored to call myself a sometimes contributor to two sites that I personally love reading very much, Women & Hollywood and Read More

The Rabbi, the Policeman and Forgiveness

forgiveness

A few weeks ago, I heard a story about a local Rabbi I have had several interactions over the last few years. He's from Argentina and leads a very spiritual congregation in my home town. It's not the synagogue that we belong to, but we have been on several occasions and I have been seated next to him at Shabbat meals and I've attended his services.  He's a gentle man, and a very wise one. He leads a very beautiful service, full of song, prayer and passion.  If you were to meet him, you would instantly know you were standing before an important leader of Read More

Getting Creative with Instagram

instagram

On my recent trip to Vietnam, I became fascinated with Instagram.  I fell in love with the country and wanted to share my experience and photos with the world. As the likes and comments began to spill in, I realized I had a new way to communicate with people back home, as well as travelers who could make recommendations and share travel tips about the places I was visiting. It added a whole new dimension to my travel experience but I knew it was just the tip of the iceberg. I've been wanting to learn more about it ever since. So when my friend, Katja Read More

On Being That Girl Again (and Why Moms Should Take Solo Trips)

instagram

If you read my blog, you know that I recently left my family for nearly two weeks to head to China and Vietnam. While I was traveling, I posted on Facebook on occasion, and very often on Instagram.  I truly thought of my time in Asia as time to regroup and decided I would benefit from a break from real life and that included social media. I also didn't carry my computer nor did I have Wifi access everywhere I went. I have never been in such a visually stunning place in my life, so photography became my best friend and I filled my Instagram stream Read More
