The Realities of Motherhood Spoken Fiercely and Truly by Scary Mommy

Confessions of a Scary Mommy

When I was wrapping up Jill Smokler’s book, Confessions of a Scary Mommy, I came to the very last page of the “Acknowledgements” and found my name in her list of “wonderful online friends” who have offered her support in writing this book.

And I now have a grin so big on my face that I wish I could frame.

Reading Jill’s new book was just as good as I thought it would be. One of the first blogs I ever read, Scary Mommy has helped anchor me through mommyhood. My only regret?  That I didn’t have it when my kids came out of my womb.

I respect Jill immensely for bringing the realities of motherhood from her web site to a book that I am so proud of her writing. I followed her closely while she was working on this book, and wondered how she could take care of 3 kids, run a business and write a book at the same time. She is a dynamo and someone I respect more than words can convey. She speaks the truth about mother hood and holds nothing back, and she has taught me that it’s okay for me to do the same. While I am reticent to talk about my own parenting style on my web site, I often let it out on hers and have been fortunate to guest post a few times and have cherished the many comments that my posts generated. Jill has a devoted and out-spoken audience and I always read the comments on every post that I read.

And the “Confessions” section that Jill started on her site a few years ago was sheer brilliance. Moms have come out in droves to leave their most secret thoughts about motherhood and left them anonymously. I love the way Jill has incorporated these confessions into her book. They start off each chapter and set the tone for Jill being candid about one facet of her life. Some of the confessions are pretty off-the-wall, and so freaking honest. You just want to meet every single one of these honest moms after reading them. Jill needs to now start a “Confessions of a Scary Mommy” conference. I’d attend.

For the real take on motherhood, the honest, genuine portrait, pick up this book.

Disclosure: I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book to facilitate this review but all opinions are my own.
