They were really excited about the film (as you can see in the photo above); I was more keen on seeing its stars Ray Romano, Queen Latifah, John Leguizamo, Aziz Ansari and Keke Palmer up close and personal as they made a brief appearance at the screening. Kids from the audience asked them questions (mine were too shy and were also not as familiar with the franchise as the other kids) and they answered candidly. And they all seemed really glad to be there, particularly the fabulous Leguizamo. Oh, it must be fun to voice an animated film and travel around the world to promote it. That I can assure you.
The film is about a continental cataclysm that triggers an adventure for the characters Manny, Diego and Sid. Using an iceberg as a ship, they encounter sea creatures and battle pirates as they explore a new world. They get separated and reunited in the end. There are new love interests, a new grandmother and other surprises in this chapter of the story.
What resonated with me, besides the delight sprouting from my children during the film, was the lesson it teaches about the significance of family. I want my kids to know that they’ll always have me and that they’ll have each other, and this movie is a strong believer in the meaning of family love. Romano touched on it in the talk back:
“It’s kind of a metaphor for life; there’s always bumps and hurdles you’ve got to get over, but through it all your family is always there and will always support you. That’s kind of what the message is underneath it all. So the kids are having fun, but they’re learning a good thing.”
This film was a big hit with my kids. I, on the other hand, long for more classic kid’s films, or ones like Brave with strong female leads. Thankfully, there is a strong female character in this film (Peaches played by Keke Palmer), so the story-line held my attention as much as it could.
Ice Age: Continental Drift features the voices of other celebrities and I took pleasure in recognizing each one including Joy Behar, Peter Dinklage, Dennis Leary, Jennifer Lopez, Simon Pegg, Patrick Stewart and many, many others.
Disclosure: I was provided with complimentary tickets to attend this screening but all opinions are my own.
