I remember reading Romeo and Juliet as a Freshman and falling deeply in love with their union, and I was more so surprised to discover that the characters were no older than I was back then. Truly a timeless tragedy, and one of the greatest love stories ever told.

  5. We read it in HS and watched The Zeffirelli film in class as well. There was no school edit, so the teacher would have to hold a sheet of posterboard in front of the screen to not show nakedness, and she lost track of time and nearly missed her cue and practically had to vault over a desk or 2 to preserve our innocent eyes

  6. I remember reading the play out loud in class and watching multiple movie adaptations in high school. It’s a classic story I never get tired of hearing!

I remember having to read it in high school which was a mistake (I didn’t like it) BUT when I saw it performed a few months later I fell in love with the story! @annabellekline

I have always loved this play. I also liked the modern film version set in Rio.
    It is a timeless story.

  18. Shakespeares tragedies… ah.. where would I begin ?

  19. What I remember most is going back to my high school years after I graduated to teach an acting workshop to the drama club. We dug into R&J and talked about stakes and why Romeo and Juliet react they way they do, because when you are young, everything really is life and death. You don’t know what you can survive yet because you’ve never survived it. When I was in college we had done the balcony scene in a voice and speech class. We went to a large park and the girls climbed up a jungle gym and the boys ran up the hill and in that moment, I remembered the first time I fell in love and the first time my heart was broken and how you almost die from it and then you don’t, and you keep breathing and learn how be an adult.

  22. I already follow you on Facebook (Sarah Packard). 🙂

  23. I did read the play in high school, both in my freshman English class and later in my high school (and college!) Shakespeare courses. 🙂 I’ve seen it onstage as well – the first time at the Stratford Festival in Canada, most notably with Megan Porter Follows (aka Anne of Green Gables!!) as Juliet…but for me I always come back to the Franco Zeffirelli film version of it, which is just gorgeous and timeless.

  24. I follow you on FB as Kristina Kelly Lashley.

  25. I read it in 7th grade, 9th grade, and in college. My favorite line is when Juliet tells her mother that she will try to like the guy her parents want for her: “I’ll look to like if looking-liking move.”

I remember the balcony scene as well as the
whole nurse character. I always found the nurse
to be funny and very interesting. She plays
such an important part of the story but I think she
    is often overlooked.

  29. I remember reading in high school and the class acting it out. What a great time we all had.

  30. I read it in high school. I love Mercutio! He’s hilarious! the story is still relevant to this day and age.

  31. I remember we had to act out the play in high school, and I tried out for it, but they didn’t pick me. However, I enjoyed watching my fellow classmates perform and it’s such a classic story, one of my favorites of all time! I love all of Shakespeare’s stories, I wish there were more plays on his other work. Thanks for the chance! Watching Orlando Bloom is just icing on the cake 😉

  32. Danielle Hughes says:

I remember reading and watching Romeo and Juliet in high school. I read aloud and felt the thrill of Shakespeare’s words. Then watching the movie and seeing it brought o life was a revelation. It lead me to take a semester of Shakespeare in college and created a life long love of the bard.
