Guest post: The Sassiness Of Kid’s TV

GoodLuckCharlie

I was raised without a television. We were a hippie, vegan family, living in Topanga, California. My parents had numerous complaints about TV, so it wasn’t part of our lives. Of course, as a child, I always vowed that when I had kids, they’d be allowed to watch TV. Now I’m a parent and, because of my upbringing without any TV, I do allow my kids to watch TV. They watch their favorite shows, but they tend to get bored after an hour or so and move on to doing something else. My kids have been watching Disney Channel shows for several years. I’m … [Read more...]

The Golden Globes Wrap-Up (in case you missed it)

Source: NYT.com

The 2011 Golden Globes were handed out tonight. The Social Network, Glee, Boardwalk Empire, The Fighter and The Kids Are All Right were among the night’s big winners.  I am proud to say that I have actually seen most of these films and shows, but I was clearly wrong about some of my projected winners.  I thought that Black Swan and The King's Speech would take more awards home (although they did both  generate best actor and actress nods) and that Mad Men would continue its award sweep after a blow-out season.  But I was happy for  most of the … [Read more...]

ArthurAshe

Yesterday I had the pleasure of joining a very special luncheon at the legendary 21 Club in NYC in honor of an organization called Moms on the Move, an organization who's sole mission it to help and inspire moms.  Paul Caine, Executive VP and Chief Revenue Office, introduced its founder, Linda Swain, as someone who has not only inspired him to be a better person, but as someone who is out to change the world. Moms on the Move is a glance into the lives of inspiring moms everywhere, highlighting the balance of family, career and life and issues that … [Read more...]

Coldwater Canyon Park

If you’re planning a trip to Los Angeles with your kids, they may be clamoring to visit Disneyland, Legoland and Sea World. While those are definitely popular Southern California attractions, you’ll need more than theme parks to keep your family occupied. Fend off boredom, expend excess kid energy and keep the kids (and yourself) completely engaged in the City of Angeles. In no particular order, let your imagination be your guide to the great places listed below. Here are my family’s 10 favorite activities to do in our hometown: 1. Star … [Read more...]

Review: The King’s Speech

9192-185-489_H

Interestingly enough, I saw The King's Speech in the same art house that I saw The Queen in when my kids were babies.  I didn't find these two films to be all that dissimilar.  Both films are about the regal monarchy in England and present life inside the castle.  They also both thrive on terrific performances, Helen Mirren in The Queen and in this case, Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush. The King's Speech stars Firth as the Duke of York.  He struggles with stammering and overcomes it before the onset of WWII - thanks to the help of unorthodox … [Read more...]

Review: Nearly Lear Presented by the New Victory Theater

susanna_poster_imgonly

When I was in high school, I couldn't get enough of reading William Shakespeare plays.  I took a Shakespeare class after school to become more absorbed in his works, and over the years, I have remained faithful to the writer and have seen most, if not all, of his works performed on NYC and London stages. Which is why I was excited to hear about and see the new play presented by the New Victory Theater, Nearly Lear. It is so inspiring to see a classic play like King Lear presented to a young audience, and I was curious to see how it be enacted. … [Read more...]

Guest Post: Continuing Our Family Legacy: Explaining And Teaching Community Advocacy To My Kids

Christina Simon

I come from a family where giving back to our community and political activism were something that was considered a civic duty. It was both an individual and a family responsibility. Growing up, we lived in Venice and Topanga, CA. To my parents, discussing the day’s political issues, current events and happenings occurred daily. The lifelong appreciation my parents instilled in me for charitable giving and community activism is something I’ll always deeply appreciate. Now, I’m trying to figure out how to teach my own two children, ages 7 and … [Read more...]

SoMediaNY: New Social Media Meet-up in Southern Westchester

SOmedia

Living in Westchester, NY, I am keenly aware that there are many other bloggers around me who share my love for social media.  But they aren't as easy to come across as they are in Brooklyn and other parts of NYC.  Westchester is sprawling and it's not always easy to pick them out of a crowd.  That's why I recently started a meet-up for like-minded people in Southern Westchester (or further out if people want to travel to Larchmont for our meetings) who want to get together and talk about everything social media.  We meet at Auray Gourmet, a  French … [Read more...]
